4 Hot Tub Maintenance Tips

If you are lucky enough to own a hot tub, or are thinking of buying one, it’s important to know how to look after it. This will ensure it is safe to use, and remains in good working order during its lifespan. They are not really complicated to take care of, but there are a few basics that every hot tub owner should know.

1. Get the water chemistry right
When the hot tub is first filled, you will need to add a high dose of sanitiser, in the form of chlorine or bromine granules. Add them when the pump is running to aid distribution, and follow the guidance about the volume of granules to add per gallons of water.

The water needs testing on a regular basis, to ensure that it is safe and clean. The best way to do this is to use testing strips or a drop test, which indicate the sanitiser, pH and total alkalinity levels of the water. The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you what the optimum levels of these chemicals should be, so that you can make adjustments if needed.

2. Keep the filtration system clear
Most types of hot tubs will have a cartridge filter system, which should be cleaned out monthly, or more often if you use the tub frequently. If the filter is left uncleaned, you will risk contaminating the water. There are plenty of video guides on how to clean out a filter properly, if you are unsure how to go about it.

3. Clean the surfaces
The surfaces should be cleaned often, with specially formulated sprays that don’t damage the surface. This is to prevent excess dirt and contaminants from being washed into the water.

4. Use the cover
It is important to cover the hot tub when not in use. This will help to maintain the water temperature, as well as preserve its cleanliness and chemical balance. Remember to leave it open after adding fresh chemicals however, to allow vapours to disperse.

How To Reduce Hot Tub Running Costs

Having a hot tub at home is one of the best ways to spoil yourself and relax at the end of a long, hard day but it can be quite a costly way to unwind if you’re not careful.

As such, it’s important that you know how best to go about reducing the running costs of your tub, so you can continue to enjoy it without breaking the bank.

It’s not just the energy costs you need to bear in mind. Hot tubs also require investment in cleaning products, water costs, maintenance and so on - although how much you spend will depend on the tub you invest in, the products you choose and your filtration system.

Making sure you choose a quality tub that’s well insulated can also help you keep running costs to a minimum. Poor insulation will mean your tub retains less heat, so will use more energy to maintain the temperatures you want. And an insulated cover can help you keep even more heat in, reducing your costs even further. This should be fitted as tight as possible using the lifter and clips provided to prevent heat escaping.

Regular maintenance can also help you cut the costs, so make sure you clean it out regularly and wash out the filter. A dirty filter will mean your tub will have to work harder in order to keep itself clean, but a bit of elbow grease will keep it in efficient working order.
